Are There Female Angels?

In Genesis 1:26 we are told that God made man in His image, and that He made them both male and female.  We also know that angels were at times called "sons of God," (Job 1:6) and on occasion appeared as men, and (perhaps) once as 'women with wings' (Zech. 5:9).  So the question is, do angels appear in both male and female forms, and what did Jesus mean when He said that we will be "like angels," and that there is no "marriage" in heaven: Luke 20:27-36?Female Angel with wings

A deer in a forest may never see even one human its entire life?  And if it did, it would more likely be a man than a woman. This is simply because more hunters, fishermen, and backpackers are male than female. So if deer could talk and think, they might easily conclude that humans are all male.

In Jude 6 we are told that some angels left their “proper abode”.   This is likely related to what Genesis 6 says about “sons of God” taking “daughters of men” as wives.   If so,  then a reasonable question is, 'What was their “proper abode,” and does it suggest that angels were (and are) sexual beings?

Many would agree that their "proper abode" was in heaven with God, and since we are told that they went in to the "daughters of men" we can be certain that this took place on earth.  We can also be fairly certain that these were among the 1/3 of the angels who rebelled against God; however, it may be that there is more to this great
mystery than "male only" angels in heaven (as some suggest), vs men and women on earth: Eph. 5:28-32.

In Genesis 6:4 we are told that,

“the Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and ... bore children to them.   Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”

Although the term “sons of God" in this verse probably refers to angels, it does not prove that all angels are male.  For the term 'sons of light' or 'brethren' are also used to refer to both men and women, such as: Psalm 8:4; Luke 16:8; John 12:36; and I Thes. 5:1-5.

In Job 1:6 it says that, “the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.”   Most bible scholars agree that this verse is talking about angels.  And according to Job 38:4-7, "the sons of God shouted for joy" when God laid the foundation of the earth: or before any humans even existed.  In this regard, William MacDonald says that the term ‘sons of God … is a standard Semitic expression' for angels. 1

Their offspring may have been the Nephilim, who were giant people from 9-16 feet tall: perhaps the same type of people whom the Israelites said made them look "like grasshoppers" in comparison: Numbers 13:31-33.   If so, the fact that they were able to have children with women tells us they were sexual beings.

We know that giant people existed, both from the Old Testament and archeology.  For example, archeologist David Hatcher Childress documents at least 10 different burial graves of humans that were from
10-12 feet tall. And excavations in the Turkish, Euphrates Valley revealed the remains of a 47 inch human femur bone, which indicates that the person it came from was from 14-16 feet tall. 3

If Genesis 6:4 was referring to men, then why doesn’t it say that “the sons of men went in to the daughters of men” ?    And if these were the Godly offspring of Adam, then why does the next verse (v. 5) talk about how wicked men were in those days?  In this regard, at this time in man's history there were apparently only eight righteous people on the planet:  Genesis 6-9 and I Pet. 3:17-20.

God did NOT give angels permission to come down from heaven and cohabitate with women, nor did He approve of what they did.  For in Jude 6 and 7 their "gross immorality" and going after "strange flesh," was compared to the sin of sodomy: or "Sodom and Gomorrah."   And since Jude mentions the book of Enoch in verse 11: this means that this part of Enoch is accurate.  More details of this incident can be found in Enoch Chapter 7, where we are told that:

"It happened after the sons of men had multiplied in those days, that daughters were born to them, elegant and beautiful. And when the angels, 4 the sons of heaven, beheld them, they became enamoured of them, saying to each other, Come, let us select for ourselves wives from the progeny of men, and let us beget children. 5

Enoch 19:2-3 also gives reference to female angels who went astray.

" ... Here shall stand the angels who have connected themselves with women, and their spirits assuming many different forms are defiling mankind and shall lead them astray into sacrificing to demons ...  (here shall they stand,) till the day of the great judgment in which they shall be judged till they are made an end of.  And the women also of the angels who went astray shall become sirens."

According to an 1859 newspaper, George Washington had an angelic vision at Valley Forge during the worst days of the Revolutionary war.  And according to the article, it was given to him by a beautiful female, who we suspect was an angel. 6   Those who scoff at such a possibility should know that this account tells of future things that America would do, including have a civil war.  This account was also published two years before the civil war, which began in 1861.

A Christian brother and friend told me of an out-of-body experience he had while in Vietnam when he was about 20: just after he was blown off of his feet and his body slammed into a building, and at which time he broke his neck.  During this experience, his spirit left his body, and he saw himself going up, above the earth -- toward a point of light that was getting larger and larger.  And on the way he noticed that there were two glowing-white angels who were traveling with him (and guiding him).  And as they were traveling, he noticed that they were giggling: because he was staring at them and trying to figure out if they were male or female.  And in this regard he noticed that  they were either switching places very fast, or their faces were changing from "male to female."  But he said that one of them was a female.

During this event, he was taken up to heaven and had a conversation with Jesus: in which the Lord asked him if he was willing to go back and tell people what he saw.   And because he said "YES," you and I get to hear some more details of what is on the other side.  In this regard there is  something significant that God told to Jeremiah: the ONLY prophet he told to not marry, and who was also called "a prophet to the nations," according to Jeremiah 1:5.

On 8-12-13, on a radio program called "Pastor's Perspective," a Lady named Karen called up to tell the audience that she was at home with her husband one evening and, for some reason she couldn't sleep, and then she found out why.  It was because of a female angel in their bedroom, who walked up to her husband and said, "You better get right with God," and then vanished.  She also said it wasn't a dream or vision, and she was wide awake when it took place.

In Jeremiah 31:22 we are told that in the future, God will “create a new thing in the earth: a woman will encompass a man.”   Just from what it says, it appears that this "new thing" involves Intimacy between the sexes.  Perhaps this takes place after the Lord re-creates All Things (Rev. 21:4-5) ? In this regard, God invented pleasure, intimacy, and sex, so why would He not re-invent it and make it even better  (Acts 11:9; I Tim. 4:4-5) ?

In this regard, the New Testament says that we are not only members of Christ's body,  but also "individually members one of another”  (Eph. 2:19-22; 4:25; 5:29-33, Rom. 8:32; 12:5, I Cor. 2:12; 3:21-22; 12:12, 20, 26-27).  And according to Rom. 9:33 and 10:11, none who believe in Jesus will be disappointed (NASB) in Christ's coming kingdom, nor in how good the Lord is to those who Love, serve, and obey Him (John 12:26 and Mal. 3:16-18).  See also Psalm 16:11; 20:4-5; 31:19; 32:7-10-b; 130:5-8; 145:15-16; Dan. 12:3.

So although there is no “marriage” in heaven as we have known it on earth (Matt. 22:23-30), in a very real sense all believers in Christ will be married to Jesus: and also, in a sense to each other.  In this regard, our dwelling place is called the Bride, the wife of the Lamb (Rev. 21:9).  We are also told that a Marriage Supper is coming, in which the servants of Christ will be rewarded (Isa. 25:6-9; Zech. 6:13; Mal. 3:18; John 12:26; Eph. 5:23-32, Rev. 3:21; 19:7 and 22:12-14).
